Shanghai Dialect

Mandarin is the official language of Mainland China, but there are many dialects used throughout the country. Shanghainese, for example, is spoken mostly in Shanghai, China's largest city and an important cultural and business center.

Shanghainese is not taught in schools, though, so many children cannot speak it. This is leading some people to worry about "the continued existence and development of the Shanghai dialect."
