Chao Ji Shi Chang

Giant supermarkets are popular throughout the world, and there are many to choose from in China and Taiwan.

The Mandarin Chinese phrase for “supermarket” is chāo jí shì chǎng. This consists of four characters: 超級市場.

The first character, 超 (chāo), means “super,” and the second character 級 (jí) means “level” or “rank.” The third character, 市 (shì), means “market” and the last character 場 (chǎng) means “open space.”

The literal translation of chāo jí shì chǎng is “super open market.”
